Lack of High-Level Management: The Missing Link in South Khorasan’s Gemstone Sector

The acting director general of the Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts Department of South Khorasan stated that the absence of high-level management is the missing link in the province’s gemstone sector.
According to Miras Aria, Seyed Ahmad Barabadi made this remark on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, during a specialized gathering of gemstone industry stakeholders. He noted that, per the governor’s directive, gemstones are considered one of the three key economic drivers of the province, with representatives from all 12 counties attending the meeting.
Barabadi recalled that following the governor’s visit to Khour, significant initiatives were mandated to boost the gemstone sector in the province.
He also mentioned that archaeological evidence found in the Kalleh-Kuh area of Sarayan indicates gemstone-related activity dating back more than 5,000 years.
Barabadi highlighted that more than 1,200 artisans and over 600 licensed workshops are currently active in the province’s gemstone industry.
He emphasized that the lack of high-level strategic management remains a critical gap and called for strong leadership to bring about positive changes—similar to the initiatives seen during the Nowruz holidays.
Barabadi also pointed out that the majority of raw gemstone materials are sourced from South Khorasan, which reflects a trend of unprocessed exports (raw selling) in the industry.
He concluded with optimism, stating that with the support and presence of the governor, South Khorasan’s gemstone sector will shine on a national level and elevate the province’s standing in this field.
End of message./
